One of the first places we direct newcomers to is the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge. This beautiful 2,774-acre area, just fifteen minutes from Bonners Ferry, is nestled between the Kootenai River and the Selkirk Mountains and serves as a home for local wildlife and migrating wildfowl. Established in 1964, it aims to protect the habitats of Canadian geese, tundra swans, and ducks during their seasonal migrations.

Some of our favorite activities include walking along the hiking trail by Deep Creek or taking the one-way auto tour road by bike or car through the refuge! Myrtle Falls Trail is an easy, mostly paved hike that's also nearby. Enjoy wildlife sightings of bald eagles, deer, elk, and perhaps even a moose or bear!
You can go fishing in the Kootenai River, Myrtle Creek, or Deep Creek and try your luck at catching a brown trout! Hunting is also permitted in certain portions of the refuge, primarily for bird hunters. Get outdoors and explore Boundary County!
