COZY CABIN FEVER: Winter Home Decor

KEEPING YOUR HOME COZY NOT CONFINING DURING THE WINTER MONTHS

The dark cold days of a North Idaho winter can make your home feel confining, especially when roads are icy or its a snow day and the kids are home from school.

Here are some tips on how to keep your home warm and cozy and bright even when its gloomy outside!

1. Add Texture

Cozy blankets and rugs not only help your house feel inviting, but they also add warmth to your home. Not only do they add a touch of comfort, but they also keep you warm on chilly nights. Choose curtains over blinds for window coverings, as they can reduce the amount of heat escaping from your home.

2. WARM ATMOSPHERE

North Idaho‘s short winter days can make your home feel dark and gloomy, so invest in some good warm LED light bulbs. These can not only add a more relaxed ambience, but help you save on your energy bill. A few floor lamps or table lamps can also help boost light. Turning on your gas fireplace or building a fire in your wood stove also saves some money and nothing beats a fire on a snowy day.

3. STORING THOSE BOOTS

Us North Idaho locals seem to have a wardrobe for every season, and during the winter our bulky coats and boots can take over the home. Having a dedicated coat closet and winter boot storage will reduce the clutter and keep things organized. Keeping winter gear separate from other seasonal gear will make it more accessible and practical.

Got a free afternoon? Let’s get an easy hike in, and it's only a few minutes from Bonners Ferry! Snow Creek Falls is only a mile and a half round trip with 200 ft elevation gain and two of the prettiest waterfalls in the county. The trailhead is just a few miles south of the Kootenai Wildlife Refuge and it's an easy drive into the mountains. The trail splits halfway down and you can explore both the lower and upper falls. The best times to visit this trail are April through October. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. If you have visitors in town, it’s one of the best little North Idaho hikes to show off to them.
